On Friday, January 27th a West San Antonio Chamber of Commerce tradition continues with the hosting of the 2017 Legacy Gala. This event will honor three individuals and one area entity from the Western Sector of San Antonio for their excellence in business and commerce and in the Westside community. The event takes place at the beautiful San Antonio Professional Fire Fighters Banquet Facility located at 8925 IH 10 West. The event starts at 6pm with a pre-event reception followed by the program at 7pm. There will be a post event reception at 9:30pm with entertainment.
This year’s list of Legacy Award honorees includes both community activist and Westside political mainstay Choco Meza (posthumously) and Rudy Bernal, retired Lanier Voks coaching legend. Also, being honored for its legacy and impact in the Westside of San Antonio is Kelly Field. The recipient of the Charles Gonzalez Western Sector Person of the Year Award is Grace Rodriguez Elliott – longtime West Chamber Board member and the immediate past Chairwoman of the Board.
Choco Meza, who recently passed away earlier this year, was a mainstay in grassroots Westside community activism. Her positive community impact has a multi-generational reach having served as the first Hispanic executive in the United States with the YWCA, as the deputy assistant secretary with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development during President Bill Clinton’s Administration and most recently serving as the Chief of Staff to 2014 Legacy Award Recipient Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales.
Providing a positive impact on the hundreds of young men he coached at Lanier High School, longtime Voks basketball coach Rudy Bernal will also be honored. Bernal retired from Lanier after 31 seasons. Although his holistic impact at the Westside area campus was incredible, he is most known for taking the Voks to the state tournament in 2000 and 2001. Bernal retired from Lanier with a career record of 563-442.
Kelly Field, celebrating is 100-year anniversary in 2017, continues to be an impactful, job creating entity that has impacted the lives of tens of thousands of Westside & San Antonio area residents. Kelly Field initially served as the cornerstone of Kelly Air Force Base and, since 2001, it has enabled Port San Antonio to emerge as a dynamic aerospace platform that continues to provide good jobs to thousands of area workers.
Grace Rodriguez-Elliott, the recipient of the Charles A. Gonzalez Western Sector Person of the Year has been a longtime organizational grassroots volunteer having served on the Boards of the Westside Family YMCA as well as the Lupus Foundation. Most recently she has served as the Chair of the West San Antonio Chamber of Commerce Board having an impactful presence in helping the organization grow and continue to prosper.
